EDIS Annual Meeting, Amherst, July 21-23, 2023

Call for Papers: "Clasp Hemispheres, and Home"

The Emily Dickinson International Society invites proposals for papers to be given at the Annual Meeting to be held in Amherst Massachusetts, Friday July 21 - Sunday, July 23, 2023. The conference theme, “Clasp Hemispheres, and Homes,” comes from Dickinson’s poem “The Sunrise runs for Both – ” (M 355, Fr765, J710). In congruence with Dickinson’s “Both” the meeting’s events will delve into the relation between Dickinson’s mental and material interiors and her expansive embrace of wider, external spheres. Celebrating the restoration of the Dickinson Homestead, we invite proposals for papers that engage with the domestic and global facets of Emily Dickinson’s life and writing and the transit between them–how the world enters the poet’s home and how her sense of home flows into the world. There are innumerable ways to approach these concerns: aesthetic, architectural, archival, biographical, formal, ecological, historical, literary, material, philosophical, psychological, social modes and more are all welcome.

Please send abstracts of no more than 300 words, along with a brief 100 word biography to edismeeting@emilydickinsonmuseum.org by Monday January 9, 2023. Decisions will be made by March 1st. Please submit proposals as a single Word document containing both the abstract and bio and with “EDIS Annual Meeting Paper Submission” as the email subject line.
