EDIS CFP: 2014 MLA Convention in Chicago

1. “A Vision on the Retina”: Emily Dickinson and Visuality

We seek papers on Dickinson’s engagements with vision in any of its senses. Nineteenth-century visual cultures, technologies, arts, performances, and spectacles; optics and theories of the visual and the verbal. Blindness, hallucination, perception, cognition, observation. Ekphrasis, metaphor, word and image. Please send 300-word abstracts by March 15th to Eliza Richards (ecr@email.unc.edu).

2. Dickinson, Poe, and 19c Aesthetic Practices

For a joint panel at MLA 2014 in Chicago being proposed by the Emily Dickinson International Society and the Poe Studies Association, we are seeking papers that compare the work of Dickinson and Poe by locating them within a 19th-century cultural trend or literary practice. Papers might focus on a shared genre, motif, aesthetic principle, or influence. Or on some other aspect of their lives or work. Please send 250-word abstract and cv by March 15, 2013 to Eliza Richards (ecr@email.unc.edu). This is a proposed joint session for allied organizations.
