Call for Papers: 2022 Dickinson Critical Institute in Seville

Graduate students and early career scholars (who have received their degrees in the last eight years) are invited to apply to the Dickinson Critical Institute to take place from 2:30 to 6:00 pm July 11, 2022, as a part of the Emily Dickinson International Society (EDIS) Conference at the College of Philology, University of Seville, Spain. The Institute provides an opportunity for participants to workshop critical essays, chapters, or conference papers in small seminars with established Dickinson scholars. Following these seminars, participants will gather for a large-group discussion of grant and award opportunities, publishing, and other professional development topics. All sessions will be conducted in English.

There is no additional charge for the Institute, but participants will be expected to register for and attend the conference, “Dickinson and Foreignhood,” which features two plenary panels and other exciting special events, including a dance performance and a reading of Dickinson’s poems in Spanish translation. For details, please see https://edisforeignhoodconference.org/. Participation in the Institute does not preclude proposing a paper for panel presentation at the EDIS Conference. Paper proposals for the Conference should be submitted separately to the conference program committee.

If you are interested in applying to the Institute, please submit a one-page cv and a 500-800-word description of your project to Eliza Richards (ecr@email.unc.edu) and Karen Sánchez-Eppler (kjsanchezepp@amherst.edu) no later than November 20, 2021. Use the subject heading “[Last Name] Dickinson Institute Application,” and attach your application materials as Word or pdf documents. Applicants will be notified by email by December 15, 2021; selected participants will be asked to circulate 8-10-page papers to their workshop group by June 1, 2022.

The EDIS will be offering limited travel funds to some participants, based on need. If you would like to apply for funds, please include a document with your application that provides the following information:

- name, email, institution, position
- itemized approximate budget for travel to the meeting
- other sources of travel funding you will apply for and/or have access to; any amount you know you will be granted
- the amount you are requesting from EDIS
