“Of Latitudes Unknown”: Towards a Poetics of Deep Mapping in Dickinson and Her Contemporaries

This session will probe the potential of deep mapping, GIS, and other technologies and methodologies of the spatial humanities to represent the multilayered and inherently unstable worlds of Dickinson and her contemporaries. We welcome papers exploring the dynamic relationships among memory, artifact, and experience; the challenges of reconstructing lost landscapes or mindscapes; new ways of engaging users’ senses in immersive environments; and new ways of embedding ambiguity and contingency in our representations of the past. We invite both theoretical papers and descriptions of current and projects influenced by the spatial humanities. Time limits will be strictly enforced to accommodate as many new perspectives as possible: 6 brief talks.
